When practicing a candle gazing Trataka, after lighting the candle, you meditate with your eyes open. Focusing all your attention outward. And resting your eyes on the flame of the burning candle.  This practice is said to improve concentration and activate your third chakra or third eye.

How To Meditate With Candles

  1. To begin your candle meditation, first,  light your candle. Then set it about 2 feet from where you will be seated. Take care to make sure that it is placed in a fireproof container and that all safety precautions are in place before you begin. The room that you are in should be dark and draft free.   2. Next, find a comfortable seated position. If you need a good meditation cushion set check out our article here. Then slowly breath in and out. Bring your awareness to your breath, steadily breathing in and out. Until your whole body feels relaxed and calm.
  3. If you decide that you want to try gazing at the candle, next gently open your eyes. Then allow your gaze to rest gently on the middle part of the candle flame. (If not, just keep breathing in and relax as you allow the scent of the candle to calmly wash over you)
  4. Without blinking your eyes too much, stare at the flame as it flickers. Get lost in the flames dance for as long as you can. If your mind wanders, be the observer and gently bring your awareness back to the flickering candle light.
  5. Notice any thoughts or awareness that comes up for you. Release any judgment on those thoughts and allow them to just gently float by. Continue your practice for as long as feels right.
